I'm gonna be starting this in the next few days but of all the books you've written this one seems to have taken a kicking from reviewers (at least on the U.K. Amazon).
Was there anything with the book you were disapointed with (apart from the reviews?)
I pretty much ignore reviews, if it's by C.L. Werner I'll buy it and form my own opinion...just curious as to why this particular book? (On the flip side people have been going mental over Blood For The Blood God...)

I think too many people went into this one thinking it was going to be a very different sort of book than it was. Then you have the squemish who ignored that gruesome cover and were shocked by the nastiness of the Nurgle realm that features in the latter half of the novel.

I'm quite happy with Palace and think only Witch Hunter and Grey Seer are better. The only novels I wish I'd been able to do more with were Blood of the Dragon and Vermintime, mostly because I could have made them even better with more room to work with.

Clint, Blood of the Dragon was frickin awesome and head-and-shoulders above most Warhammer Fantasy novels out there. I'd say the Brunner series was some of your best work with Witch Hunter. You know what I didn't like about Grey Seer (too much William King, too little Clint Lee Werner :P) and Vermintime is without a doubt the best Skaven novel of them all (albeit I understand what you mean about doing more with more room...).

Just had to comment.

"mostly because I could have made them even better with more room to work with".

That leads to another question, one of the criticisms of 'Palace' was that it was C.L. Werner doing 400 pages instead of the 250 pages of Thulman and Brunner (although Runefang seemed to do just fine).
How come you had 400 pages to play with for Palace but not for your previous works ? (I thought Blood Of The Dragon was awesome and I still haven't read Palace yet so I won't comment any further untill I've read the darned thing!). Does Black Library tell you in advance of receiving a typescript/proposal how many pages they're willing to accept?

At the time, the Black Library was still doing smaller novels, which both the Thulmann sequels and Blood of the Dragon were budgeted for. While I would have liked a little extra room for Witch Finder, Witch Killer worked perfectly fine in the shorter format. The one that really disappointed me was Vermintime which due to miscommunication I plotted out for the longer length and then ended up having to streamline and trim quite a bit.

Blood of the Dragon had a similar fate, though I was much more successful streamlining the story. Originally there was an entire subplot with the wood elves and quite a bit more with Malok. The dragon would have trashed Paravon and fought the pegasus knights in a full-on Rodan-esque sequence before chasing Gobineau and the heroes into the Forest of Loren where he would engage a forest dragon in mortal combat. Instead of the Massif Orcal, the ending was going to be set in the Forest of Loren, though it would play out much the same only without de Chegney's knights present. Ithilweil was even supposed to survive in the first draft!

Well I finally read it...(got sidetracked by R.A. Salvatore)...I really enjoyed it, more than Runefang in fact...and the ending I did not see coming (I'm normally good at that sort of thing).
It felt very Dungeons & Dragons...I loved it...we had a party of fighters, magic user, dwarf and er... an ogre setting off into the wilderness, finding frozen ships and battling a Kraken...what's not to like?
People will always prefer Mathias Thulman and Brunner beacuse they're iconic characters...but this was definitely up there as a great read.
I know you're doing a book for each power but did this count as a Nurgle book or Tzeentch book?

I'd say this one counts as the Nurgle book. I do have plots for the Slaanesh and Tzeentch books plotted out, but I don't know when they'll fit into the lineup for the Black Library. I've just gotten the go for my next book and though it is Chaos-related, it isn't an entry in the Chaos Powers series.

Blood of the Dragon was a VERY entertaining novel with lots of interesting characters and a plot that worked. I got my copy of Death and Dishonour today...it was a little tough to decide amongst books though...there were plenty there I wanted....anyhow, I went with my first choice!

I can still remember scenes from this book, though I'm not sure how long ago it was I read it. You have a knack for the visceral.
